Engraving vs Inlay – What is the difference?

When it comes to customising a cutting board, there are two main approaches: laser engraving and CNC router inlays.
Both start from the same idea β€” a digital design β€” but they work in completely different ways and produce very different results.


How They Work (The Technical Difference)

Laser Engraving (Thermal Process)

A laser engraver uses a focused beam of light to burn or vaporise the surface of the wood.

  • The laser moves across the surface following the design
  • Heat removes a very thin layer of material
  • Depth is controlled by laser power, speed, and number of passes

You can think of it as a highly controlled burn rather than a cut.

Key characteristics:

  • Non-contact process (no physical tool touching the wood)
  • Extremely fine detail (very small beam size)
  • Typically shallow depth (surface marking rather than deep carving)

CNC Router Inlay (Mechanical Process)

A CNC router uses a spinning cutting tool (router bit) to physically remove wood.

For inlays, the process usually involves:

  1. Cutting a pocket into the base board
  2. Cutting a matching plug piece
  3. Gluing the two together
  4. Flattening and finishing the surface

The cutting tool moves in X, Y, and Z axes, allowing precise control of depth and shape.

Key characteristics:

  • Physical contact cutting (chips and dust are removed)
  • Full control over depth

The Finish They Leave

Laser Engraving Finish

  • Surface-level detail (typically ~0.1–0.5 mm deep)
  • Darkened or burnt appearance due to heat
  • Very sharp, fine lines and small text
  • Charred surface (small depth or with a bumpy texture)

Because it burns the wood, laser engraving always creates a contrast effect rather than a dimensional one.

In simple terms:
It looks like the design is printed or drawn into the wood.


CNC Inlay Finish

  • Physical depth and dimension in the design
  • Clean, natural wood colour (no burn marks)
  • Can be sanded perfectly flush with the surface
  • Visible grain contrast between different woods

Because it’s cut rather than burned, the result is a true part of the board, not just a surface mark.

In simple terms:
The design is actually built into the board, not just on it.


Durability & Use on Cutting Boards

This is where the two really separate.

Laser Engraving

  • Shallow surface mark
  • Can wear over time with heavy use
  • Best for decorative or lighter-use boards

CNC Inlays

  • Typically much deeper (often several millimetres or more)
  • Structurally part of the board
  • Can be resurfaced and last the life of the board

Deep CNC cuts and inlays allow the design to remain visible even after years of use, whereas laser engraving relies on surface contrast.


Why They Are Priced Differently

Laser Engraving (Lower Cost)

  • Faster process
  • Minimal setup
  • No tooling wear
  • Single-step production

Great for quick customisation and fine detail at lower cost.


CNC Inlays (Higher Cost)

  • Multiple machining steps
  • Precision fitting of separate pieces
  • Gluing, clamping, and surfacing
  • Higher material use and tighter tolerances

Much more labour-intensive, but produces a premium, long-lasting result.
